There’s no denying that the cute factor goes along way towards selling baby clothes. Color and style are the first things we notice but savvy moms are beginning to wise up and have begun to use some additional criteria for choosing baby’s outfits. Here are five easy tips on how to buy quality clothing for your baby’s first months.

SIZE
Shopping for a new outfit for baby should be simple. The sizes are laid out for us according to the age of the child and once we get our feet wet, we know whether to move the guidelines back a notch or to move them forward if we have a bigger or smaller than average baby. Baby gowns are loose fitting and fall straight from the shoulders, so an excellent fit should not be a huge issue.

COLOR
Traditional colors of infant clothes are still various shades of pink and blue so there’s very little chance that you will make a poor color selection. Moms of boys prefer blue and it seems that baby girls will continue to be pretty in pink for the time being. Other colors that are popular backgrounds for bunnies, teddy bears and yellow ducks would be pale yellow, lavender and mint green. Any pastel color will work so long as you don’t mind the occasional mistake in determining your baby’s gender by well meaning strangers. There are hints that bolder colors are making some headway so stay tuned for further updates.

FIT
Baby gowns are loose fitting and fall straight from the shoulders, so a good fit should be difficult to get. For every preemie that is too tiny for standard newborn sizes there is a chubby little sweetheart that has difficulty squeezing in a sleeper meant for a three month old baby. Use the sizes on the package as guidelines, but trial and error may be necessary.

FABRIC
Soft cotton fabrics are the gold standard when it comes to baby clothes. Most parents look for comfortable cotton flannels and knits and many prefer organic. I am of the opinion that lightly used organic cotton baby clothes are better than brand new synthetics. Recycling baby clothes is an excellent way to clothe baby inexpensively and to help our environment. Shop online auctions, baby forums and garage sales and you may find some fabulous bargains.

CONSTRUCTION
An infant’s skin is much more sensitive and easy to irritate than that of adults or even that of older children. For that reason, I recommend parents inspect baby clothes before buying them by turning them wrong side out and taking a good look at the construction of the garment. Rough edges can make a raw spot very quickly and unfinished seams can give you some hints as to the overall quality of the piece.

These are just basic ideas but if you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find some baby clothes that will wear and wash well until your little one outgrows them. Once you are done with them, pass them forward to another new mother along with any other useable baby gear and decorative nursery items that have outlived their usefulness in your home. There is no better gift to give to our children than a clean and untainted environment so please recycle when you can.

Online baby boutiques have been springing up everywhere… so where to buy? Use the following buyer’s guide to determine whether or not the boutique you’ve selected will offer everything you need in a crib bedding store. Hold your choice up against the following list, and see how they fare before making your decision:

Return Policy – Sure that online boutique is cute, but do they offer a return policy? If so, what can you expect from it? The better and more reputable baby boutiques will offer a full refund on their merchandise, within a reasonable time period. Sometimes a nursery decor simply doesn’t match right, and you’ll want to know you can have a no-hassle return in the case the bedding arrives and you’re simply not satisfied with it. Check to make certain there are no hidden terms or conditions. A good boutique will have no trouble accepting back their own merchandise.

Free Shipping – This isn’t just a common practice these days, it’s nearly a given. As more and more shipping companies compete for business, the cost of shipping most items has dropped dramatically. A good baby boutique will offer free shipping to its customers, especially on a purchase as significant as a crib bedding set. Obtaining free shipping from the company you purchase from leads to one less hassle, and one less place to be hit with hidden charges.

High-End Bedding – Only the best baby boutiques are selected to offer name brand luxury crib bedding. More popular ones include Serena & Lily, Caden Lane, and Glenna Jean to name a few. Any boutique not carrying the more finer lines of crib bedding carry a lot less legitimacy, and you should therefore consider them more carefully before buying from them.

Swatches – As online shopping becomes more and more common, people are increasingly buying items without seeing or touching them. If in doubt about a color or fabric, ask your baby boutique if they can send you sample swatches of the material. A good boutique will carry such swatches, especially on the higher-end products. Seeing and feeling your baby’s bedding in advance gives you a lot more feel for what your nursery will turn out like, and plus you can use that swatch to match a paint color for the walls as well.

Selection – The bedding boutique you buy from should carry a large selection of colors and patterns from which to choose. Getting your nursery decor exactly the way you want it is often challenging, and a boutique with more options allows for more flexibililty when trying to match the rest of your baby’s room. Bedding might also come in one particular color but in several patterns of that color, making it easier to exchange sets if you decide to change your mind.

Bedding Accessories – Before buying, make sure the boutique offers all of the accessories for that particular line of bedding. A usual 4-piece bedding set includes a crib quilt, a bumper, a sheet, and a crib skirt. Most times a bedding line will include extra accent pillows, shams, and throws, while some even have matching valances and lamps. You might not want these initially, but once your purchase arrives it’s nice to know you can go back and get the matching accessories in the event you change your mind. Deal with a boutique carrying a full line of product, and not just certain items.

Finding the right crib bedding is only half the battle. With a little homework, and by following the examples in the above guide, you’ll be able to select the right boutique to go along with it. Good luck and happy shopping!

Once your little one starts crawling around, it is time to baby proof. What should you do to baby proof your home?

 1. Install child locks on kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and toilet seat covers. To encourage creative play, make one of your kitchen cabinets full of plastic containers accessible for play to him. Make the rest of the cabinets off limits by locking them. Be sure chemicals and medications are locked up in your cabinets out of access to the baby. Toilet seat locks should be installed to prevent drowning, in case the toddler falls in.Toddler Proof Safety Gate

 2. If you are passionate about your breakables, put them out of reach of the child. If you are saying “No” to your child constantly to get him away from your breakables, it discourages curiosity and exploration. It is better to put breakables out of his reach.

 3. Electric socket covers. It is important to cover every electric socket that is not being used with these covers.

 4. Child safety gates. If you have stairs or a room that is off limits to your baby, install a child safety gate to seal off access.

 5. Cover any sharp corners on tables with a soft material or foam and duct tape. Better yet, temporarily relocate your coffee table when he starts crawling. This gives him more room to roam and limits injuries from his head hitting the table when he crawls, cruises, and eventually falls. You can put the coffee table back once he gets the hang of walking.

 6. Bath safety. You can purchase some faucet covers and non-slip mats when you start bathing your toddler in the family bathtub.

MORNING:
Best for: Yoga. Your ability to perform is lowest in the morning; better to keep your exercise less intense in the a.m. hours.

Going long: When your core temperature gets high, fatigue sets in. Your inner thermometer is lowest now, so you will take longer to overheat.

AFTERNOON:
Best for: Smashing the competition.

Time for the smackdown: Some moves requiring accuracy, like your tennis serve, are most precise around 2 p.m., when it’s easiest to get energized and your focus is sharpest.

EVENING:
Best for: Getting strong. Your core body temp is highest in the early evening, so your muscles will warm up more easily and you can work harder.

Scoring: For the same reason, this is also when you have the most power to make explosive movements, such as those used in soccer or volleyball.

During pregnancy clothing should be comfortable. One should make a careful choice of clothes. The shape of the breasts greatly depends on the clothes you wear during pregnancy and lactation. Breast become very heavy during pregnancy because of the hormones secreted in preparation of feeding her baby. Do not get worried about this change. Support the breasts with the appropriate size of bras capable of allowing the enlargement of breasts as during the period of pregnancy, breasts tend to grow faster.

The bra should be made of cotton and not of synthetic material. It should be well-fitting to be able to support the extra weight of the breasts during pregnancy and lactation. At the same time, the bra should not be so tight as to squash or compress the breasts. Pressure on the breasts can produce a collapse of milk production glands besides causing pain and irritation. The bra should open at the front, either with a clip or laces, so that it is easy to fasten and undo.

After delivery, it is necessary to know what to wear. Do not try to expose the breasts to feed your child by pulling the bra up or down. Some women do not prefer to wear bra during the period of pregnancy or lactation. It is alright during pregnancy, if the breasts are small and a support is not required. However, during the lactation period, when the breasts are usually heavy, one must use a bra.

During the night the bra may be removed. Take care to prevent your breasts from being compressed during sleep so they do not hurt. Remember, the breasts should be kept clean. Some absorbent material may be required at night to prevent the sheets from getting spoiled due to any leakage of breast milk.

During the day time, several brassieres are required during the lactation period as they are likely to be spoiled often by leakage of milk. To avoid this problem, it is wise to keep a cotton cloth or a piece of clean diaper to soak the leakage on the inner side of brassiere. Do not insert tissue or cotton wool, these can stick to the nipples and create problems when removing them. During the summer season avoid nylon or silk brassiere, these may cause rashes and allergic reactions on the delicate skin of the breasts.

As young children get older, they start to crawl and walk around the home. Parents can guard against possible dangers by conducting a home safety evaluation from the child’s point of view. The Home Safety Council recommends that parents look at each room from their child’s eye-level and use the following tips to make homes safer for young children:

# Young children need constant supervision, especially around water

# Install sturdy baby gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs.

# Install child safety locks on cabinets to safely store matches and lighters, chemicals, cleaners, medicines, cosmetics, and other toxic and/or caustic products.

# Purchase cleaners, household chemicals, medications and other potentially hazardous products with child resistant packaging.

# Post the national Poison Control Hotline (1-800-222-1222) and other emergency numbers next to every phone.

# Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and near sleeping areas.

# Install toilet seat locks; turn over all buckets and store them up high, where they cannot collect standing water or be reached by children. When young children are in the bath, near a pool, a toilet or other standing water, play close attention and stay within arm’s reach of them at all times.

# Test faucet water at the tap and adjust water heater to 120°F or below.

# If your home has a pool, surround it on all sides with installed fencing and a self-latching gate.

# Never leave a child unattended near standing water, even for a moment.

# Locate cribs, beds, chairs and other furniture away from windows.

# Install window locks or safety guards on above-ground windows. Be sure they have a quick-release mechanism in case of fire.

# Keep window treatment cords and sashes tied and stored up high overhead; purchase new mini-blinds that meet safety standards.

# Store matches, lighters, candles and other fire tools out of children’s sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.
